the manual says

The BITS setting will let you toggle individual "operand bits" (the 32 flip-flops under INSTRUCTION 1 and 2) with MIDI keys .

It is however quite lacking in information on which precise MIDI keys to use. I know with myself I'll forget this if I haven't used Permut8 in a while, so I'd appreciate it if this information could be added.

BTW: wow! It's surprisingly rare to find software that both confuses and fascinates. I've encountered plenty that manages just one of those, but cudos for managing both at once. ;-)
