Does anyone by chance know what hardware the Permut 8 software might be based on? Are there any specific hardware devices like it that actually exist ?

The PDP-8 definitely has a family resemblance (Great Uncle maybe? ) But as it's audio (if available) was based on generating EMI through an AM radio, nowhere near as musically adept (IMO). Of course, matter of opinion. 😁
