when i first got permut8 i, for some reason, thought it was a good idea to use my irl name for my account which i really don't like. is there a way to change this

yes, I've changed it so it's now using your forum profile name instead. Just re-run the Sonic Charge Authenticator and it should pick up the change.

i appreciate it but i was specifically looking to change it to a name that is currently taken on the forums (funny enough by another account i apparently made that i can't delete because i don't think this website even lets you)

yeah i just checked all my folders and couldn't find your reply anywhere
i'm not sure why but it's no big deal since both my forum name and the display name within the vst are what i actually want them to be
